Handcrafted Bowls and Pens Made from the Trees of Harvard University
The trees of Harvard beautify and frame the University. They also contain centuries of history within their rings.
This bowl was handcrafted from a Green Ash tree (Fraxinus pennsylvanica) that shaded Johnston Gate from within Harvard Yard. Johnston Gate has long served as the main entrance to the Yard and leads directly to the John Harvard Statue. In 1889, Samuel Johnston donated funds to create an artistic steel gate, replacing the wooden fence that once stood in its place. Following his donation, classmates and other graduating classes were inspired by Johnston’s example and funded many of the gates that now stand and beautify the campus. This bowl measures 8 3/4” wide by 4” tall.
