Winthrop Red Elm #65
This large bowl was handcrafted from a Red Elm tree (Ulmus rubra) that grew in the courtyard of Gore Hall at Winthrop House. When Gore Hall was rebuilt in 1913, two large Red Elms were planted on opposite sides of the courtyard. In 2016, after 103 years, these massive trees were removed to facilitate the ongoing House Renewal projects.
Gore Hall was one of the original seven freshman dormitories at Harvard. In 1931, Gore Hall and Standish Hall were combined to form Winthrop House. Gore Hall's most prominent former resident is John F. Kennedy. Prior to the House Renewal, Harvard preserved Kennedy's senior dorm room as a guest room, primarily for visiting political figures attending the Kennedy School of Government.
This is the largest bowl that will crafted from this tree and nearly the last. The bowl measures 11 1/4" by 6" inches tall.
Also included:
A card explaining the history of this tree on campus
Decorative packaging
Standard engraving featuring the Harvard Veritas logo, or optional custom engraving on the underside of the bowl
